Dwinetta CP 3

Hello all! This week in conversing! Venus BBMed me (thats blackberry messaged me for all you Blackberry unsavvy people) about going to the circus although she called it a "cyrus" at first. Having never been to the circus before I accepted! I brought along a friend of mine and we all prepared to go. Venus and I chatted it up on the way there, catching up on what we had done since last seeing each other at Starbucks. She tried to explain to me what was going on with her sister's car, but the mechanical vocabulary was too much for her in English so she just said "car problems" instead. Upon arrival to the civic center, we had to purchase tickets. It is out of Venus' comfort zone to speak for herself in English, so she asked me questions to ask the teller. She asked me in perfect english the questions she wanted answers to but I think she was just a little nervous. She ended up asking the teller the questions and did great. We sat through the first half of the show, whispering in between about the differences between this circus and the ones she has been to in Panama. We saw a bunch of kids, some of whom were dressed alike, she relayed to me that her mother used to dress her and her little sister alike as well. I told her my mother did the same thing with me and my older sister (a little annoying if you ask me, I like my own style). When intermission rolled around, Venus said she was hungry, so we went to the concessions to see what kinds of salty, sugary goodness they had to offer. Once again Venus was nervous to use her English, so I told her I would walk with her if she needed help, she ended up doing perfectly, even though the concession lady seemed a little impatient with her...

Overall, this session went great because Venus was able to talk with me and my friend, and she was forced to communicate on her own. We're taking baby steps people!! Until next time. Netta Out!!

  2. Netta, I think it is great that you are providing moral and linguistic support, while at the same time letting her do the communicating.
